Imodium

  • Therapeutic Classification: Gastrointestinal Tract
  • Pharmacologic Classification: Opiod - Antidiarrheals
  • Generic Description: Loperamide HCL 2mg
  • Indications: Diarrhea
  • Adults (Acute diarrhea) Initial dose of 4mg, then 2mg after each loose stool; maximum of 16mg per day. Stop after 48 hrs if ineffective.
  • Children 48 -59 Ibs (6 – 8yrs): initial dose of 2mg, then 1mg after each loose stool; maximum of 4mg per day for 2y days. 60 -95 Ibs (9 – 11yrs): initial dose of 2mg, then 1mg after each loose stool; maximum of 6mg per day for 2 days.
  • Contraindications: Patients in whom constipation must be avoided, abdominal pain of unknown cause, especially if associated with fever, alcohol intolerance (liquid only), acute dysentery.
  • Precautions: Acute ulcerative colitis and antibiotic induced pseudomembranous colitis; discontinue if abdominal distention occurs. In dehydration, use fluid and electrolyte replacement. Hepatic dysfunction; monitor for CNS toxicity. Pregnancy (Cat.B). Nursing mothers.
  • Interactions: Use with caution especially with drugs such as Clozapine, Gemfibrozil, Itraconazole, ketoconazole, quinidine.
  • Side Effects: Abdominal Pain, distention, constipation, dry mouth, nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, rash.
  • How Supplied: Capsules and Tablets- 2mg, Liquid 1mg/5mL, 1mg/7.5mL

 


Pepto-Bismol (aka KAOPECTATE)

  • Therapeutic Classification: Gastrointestinal Tract
  • Pharmacologic Classification: Antidiarrheals
  • Generic Description: Bismuth subsalicylate 262mg/15mL; regular and peppermint ( contains Potassium 5mg, Soldium 10mg), cherry flavor (contains Soldium 10mg.)
  • Indications: Diarrhea.
  • Adults 30mL every 30 – 60 minutes if needed. Maximum of 8 doses per day.
  • Children Not recommended.
  • Contraindications: Varicella or influenza in children and teenagers, aspirin/salicylate allergy.
  • Precautions: Coagulation disorders. Ulcer. Diabetes. Reye’s syndrome. Soldium-restricted diet. Pregnancy. Nursing mothers.
  • Interactions: Potentiates oral anticoagulants, hypogycemics. Antagonizes uricosurics. Salicylism with asprin. Reduces tetracycline absorption.
  • Side Effects: Darkened tongue and /or stool, ringing in the ears.
  • How supplied: Suspension (regular, peppermint, cherry and extra strength liquid), chewable, caplets.
